Stefanos Tsitsipas beats Cameron Norrie to win Lyon Crown

    May 24, 2021

Stefanos Tsitsipas won his second ATP tour title of the year on Sunday as he emerged victorious in the final of the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon by a 6-3, 6-3 set against Cameron Norrie.

The 22-year-old won his first ATP Masters 1000 event at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in April and now with this win, he is leading the tour with 33 wins this year. That means, he is four ahead of Andrey Rublev (29). The victory over Norrie marked the seventh ATP Tour Title in Tsitsipas’ career.

Tsitsipas has now extended his lead in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin and has also made himself one of the favourites to win the Roland Garros.

“I felt in good shape from the beginning of the tournament. I am proud of today’s match, I knew it would be a difficult one against Cameron who has been showing great tennis this week,” Tsitsipas said.

“He has been winning against good players and showing what the left hand can do on clay. It was not an easy match today, I had to handle the nerves and I am proud of my performance and the way I stayed focussed towards my goal,” he added.

Tsitsipas earned 250 FedEX ATP Ranking Points this week. As a result, he has now increased his lead in the first place of the race to 440 points. He now has 3360 points to his name whereas Novak Djokovic is placed second in the rankings with 2920 points.

“It is about getting there as early possible, starting to practise and getting in shape for the big Parisian Grand Slam, which I adore and love and hopefully something good can come from it,” Tsitsipas said.

The Greek is yet to lose an ATP 250 final. He has won all of the five finals he has played in till now and is yet to drop a set (10-0) in these matches as well.
