New York is in my heart: Daniil Medvedev reaches third consecutive US Open semifinal

The World no.2 Daniil Medvedev continued his dominating run in the US Open as he won his quarterfinal match against Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp. Medvedev won 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the third consecutive US Open semi final.

The Russian was at his best as he was able to hit the ground running and took a 5-1 lead in the first set. However, Zandschulp got one break back but Medvedev was able to seal the set by 6-3.

Medvedev dominated the second set as he bageled his opponent. However, the Dutch qualifier made sure that Medvedv didn’t secure a win in straight sets, like he has done in the first four matches of the ongoing US Open as he won the third set by 6-4. However, Medvedev won the fourth set by 7-5 to seal the victory.

The number two seed admitted that he found his momentum in the fourth set and he was pleased with his complete performance.

“First two sets he was missing and I was controlling the game and then he got more aggressive, he made it much tougher for me. I couldn’t find my rhythm in the first two sets due to shadows, but in the fourth set it was more clear and I could find my toss, rhythm and serve better.” Medvedev said in his post-match interview.

“I had my first Grand Slam breakthrough in New York reaching the 2019 final against Rafael Nadal, so already New York is in my heart. Dominic Thiem played amazing in the semi-finals last year, hopefully I can go one better this year.” “Botic’s run was amazing, to come from qualifiers to the main draw is amazing. He played so many long matches but was still able to come back, anything could’ve happened in the fourth set.” he added.

Medvedev will face either Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinal of the US Open.
