Kyle Edmund confident of Wimbledon glory

    June 29, 2019

Kyle Edmund is confident he can win the Wimbledon title despite a poor season in 2019 to date. The 24-year-old has proved he can mix it with the best after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in 2018 but it has been slim pickings in the Grand Slams since then.

The South African-born ace has yet to go past the third round in any of the big four events after his Melbourne heroics and was a first-round casualty Down Under this year before crashing out of the French Open in round two.

However, he is now back on grass and set to play American Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International on Friday. Edmund has yet to advance past round three at the All England Club but when asked if he could go all the wat at SW19, the GB David Cup ace was in no doubt. “Yeah, definitely,” he told BBC Sport.

“I believe that. I know I have the game for it. There’s a point where you really have to start believing it if you want to do it and I’ve really started to believe it over the last few years.”

Injury has hampered his progress this year but Edmund has made it clear that is no longer an issue and he is 1.67 to progress to the final of the south-coast event, with Fritz on offer at 2.15.

Novak Djokovic is the 2.38 favourite to win Wimbledon while Roger Federer can be backed at 4.00. Edmund is priced at 81.00 to lift the famous trophy next month but he is happy to be the centre of attention at the year’s third ‘Slam.

“Everyone turns on the TV for that time of year and the first name you go to is the British number one, that’s where the expectation is,” he added.
