I’m beyond fortunate in my life to win 23 Grand Slams, it’s an incredible feeling – Novak Djokovic after winning Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic wrote his name in the history books as he won his 23rd Grand Slam title by beating Casper Ruud in straight sets to win the Roland-Garros at the iconic Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday. The Serbian bested the Norwegian by 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 to claim a record 23rd major title.

Ergo, Djokovic became the first male player to win 23 Grand Slam titles. Furthermore, he also became the first player to win every Grand Slam title on at least three occasions.

In fact, Casper Ruud made a solid start as he broke Novak Djokovic’s serve in the second game of the opening set and then backed it by holding his serve for a 3-0 lead. However, Djokovic, who is known to bring his best in pressure situations, retaliated in an expected manner as he soon got his break back.

Subsequently, Djokovic hardly gave any chance to Casper Ruud to come back into the game as he carried the impetus. The Serb considers himself fortunate to win 23 Grand Slam crowns in his glorious career.

“Obviously a Grand Slam is a Grand Slam,” said Djokovic at the trophy ceremony. “The four biggest tournaments that we have in our sport. Every single player dreams of being on this stage and winning the trophy at least once in their career. I’m beyond fortunate in my life to win 23 times, it’s an incredible feeling.”

Djokovic wrapped up the game in three hours and 13 minutes as he once again brought his best to the court in the all-important final.

On the other hand, Casper Ruud showered praise on Djokovic and also congratulated the Serbian for the record-setting Grand Slam title.

“Another day, another record for you,” said Ruud, when addressing Djokovic at the trophy ceremony. “And another day you rewrite tennis history. It’s tough to explain how incredible it is and how good you are, and what an inspiration you are to so many people around the world.

“Congratulations to you and your team. I know this tastes probably the best out of all [of your major titles]… I’m happy I’m the first one to congratulate you here, from this stage.”

Djokovic will now prepare for the upcoming Grass season.
