Andy Murray relishing the opportunity to play against Rafael Nadal after so many years

    December 17, 2021

Former World No. 1 Andy Murray cruises past Daniel Evans in the Mubadala Tennis Championships to set up a date with  Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. Murray feels that it will be a lot of fun to play the Spaniard again after so many years. For the fans aswell it will be a treat as they will get to see two of the top tennis players from this generation take on each other.

Murray looked good in the first match as he defeated Dan Evans in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Evans who got the last minute call up to play in the tournament after Dominic Thiem’s withdrawal fail to live up to the expectations.

In the post-match interview, the Scotsman highlighted how he never thought he will get to play in any of the big matches ever again. He also recalled how matches between him and Nadal always go down the wire. The duo have played some iconic tennis games and are fierce when they are competing against each other on the court.

“I mean, I don’t know, you know if I was going to get an opportunity to play matches like that again. Rafa is someone I had some great battles with at some of the biggest tournaments in the world. We played here a few times as well. Yeah, he has obviously had his injury troubles as well last year I saw,” Murray said in the interview.

The 34-year-old highlighted how just ike him Nadal has also struggled with injuries recently. This is the first event that Nadal has played after his foot injury.

“Yeah, it will be great to get an opportunity to play against him again. It will be a lot of fun and hopefully, we can put on a good performance for a couple of old guys,” Murray continued.

Later in one of Murray’s training sessions, the three-time Grand Slam winner was asked about his favourite players. Surprisingly the Scotsman took Nadal’s name. He said how that he always enjoyed watching Nadal play.

“For me probably, to watch, I love watching Rafa. Over the years, I loved watching Nadal,” mentioned Murray.
