Update on UFC Fight Night 170

    March 16, 2020

UFC Fight Night 170 held on the 14th of March at the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil.

That would be the first UFC event to be held since the Coronavirus was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation. Even though other sports have temporarily suspended activities for a couple weeks or indefinitely, the UFC is determined to continue its fights as schduled.

The fight, which was fought in an almost empty arena, due to a suspension of gatherings in the federal district, featured some very spectacular fixtures.

Charles Oliveira once again showed us why he is one of the best after defeating Kevin Lee by submission. The three-round fight ended with Lee being caught in a guillotine, forcing him to tap out. Oliveira showed determination from the very beginning, inflicting damages and responding every punch with a greater one.

He opened every round with a front kick, starting with the right momentum. His opponent was fierce too, but Oliveira came prepared to secure his seventh win a row. The third round was when Oliveira converted a takedown by Lee into a choke that forced the other man to tap out.

In the second fight for the night, Gilbert Burns was able to defeat Demian Maia in the first round as the referee has to step in because he felt Maia was no longer in control, a move Maia would later protest against.

Burns was quick to recover from a hit by Maia and was, within seconds, back on his feet. He responded with a sharp blow that saw Maia land on the floor. Thinking he had done the damage, Burns was waiting for the referee’s move but saw nothing, and proceeded to land a series of blows to his opponent on the floor.

This was when the referee stepped in, ending the match. Burns has now won 5 of his matches in a row.

The UFC, according to Dana White, would continue to hold its matches as planned unless there is a direct call by the government to ban the matches, like the case in Italy and London.
