Rory McIlroy Struggles to Keep up at Wentworth

    September 21, 2019

Currently, in Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship, World number two, and latest FedEx Cup Winner Rory McIlroy had one of the worst rounds in his career and finished eleven shorts under leader Matt Wallace. McIlroy played four over 76, making 13 shots at the final two holes.

Finishing top of the table is Matt Wallace with a total of 65, after making five birdies and an eagle in his last game, while McIlroy comes in at a low number 121. This is particularly surprising, especially when you take into context the North Irishman’s achievements this year.

Just last week here, he was named the PGA Tour Player of the year against highly favored Brooks Koepka, added to two other previous wins. He has enjoyed a very good run and has been projected to enjoy more. However, his recent performance has raised doubts as he does not seem fit or ready.

McIlroy started the round very well, making an eagle and a birdie at the fourth and fifth hole respectively. He began to face a decline, however, at the eight-hole, making three boogies, with further mistakes at the 13th hole. Although he tried to improve his game, he could not just do enough to save himself as he made two boogies at the 17th hole before finishing. Between those two holes, McIlroy made a total of 13 shots.

Coming in just behind Wallace, at second and third place, on the leaderboard is Henrik Stenson and John Rahm. Paul Casey shines at 4th while Robert MacIntyre stays on the 19th spot.

Wallace, who was the crowd’s favorite, has also had a good year, topping most events he has featured in.
