    Philippe Clement

We are just starting, says Monaco coach Clément

    May 3, 2022

The manager of AS Monaco, Philippe Clément, has said his side is just starting as they maintained their fantastic run of form after sweeping aside Angers 2-0 at the Stade Louis II on Sunday.

The hosts took the maximum points after an own-goal was followed by Wissam Ben Yedder’s 21st strike of the season. This victory makes it seven straight league wins for them.

Next on their lookout is a clash against last season’s champions, LOSC, on Friday. A win there would provisionally catapult them above Marseille and into second place.

While noting that his lads are built to win matches, Clément has marched his words with action by leading Monaco to their best winning run so far this season.

While lauding his squad for maintaining their shape well throughout the game, the coach said the team remained calm and combative as they are always looking to add to their tally rather than just holding onto the lead they already have.

The coach, who pointed out that it is a very important way to play, having lost three top players in Tchouaméni, Vanderson, and Disasi, said they still coped well with the situation and sealed the points.

Clément, who further said the replacements have really proven their worth, however, admitted that Monaco is yet to reach its limits, adding that there is potential to grow.”

Monaco is now occupying the fourth place now, which has led to a tight battle for Champions League qualification with Marseille, which is three points ahead in second whilst only goal difference separates Clément’s side and Rennes in third.

Wissam Ben Yedder has no doubt been one of the keys to Monaco’s recent success. The 33-year-old striker continued to show his efficiency in front of goal, having broken his Ligue 1 Uber Eats goal-scoring record against Angers. This is the first time the striker has scored  21 goals in a French top-flight season.

Clément said the former Sevilla striker is not satisfied yet because he aims to score more goals in the upcoming matches.

Monaco will be going into their last three games, which will all be like finals, as they aim to overhaul Rennes starting with a trip to LOSC on Friday evening.

They will then host Brest at home before heading to Lens on the final day.
