WCQ: Ivory Coast, Cameroon win as Egypt thrash Libya

    October 12, 2021

Ivory Coast and Cameroon kept moving neck in neck in Group D of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers after respectively beating Malawi and Mozambique.

After losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast in September, Cameroon has now followed it up with consecutive wins.

The Indomitable Lions beat Mozambique 3-1 on Friday and then followed it with a 1-0 win in Morocco where the second leg was played on Tuesday.

Gent’s  Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui scored the game’s only goal in the 68th minute as Cameroon took six points from possible six.

The win puts them in Nine points, one behind table toppers Ivory Coast who defeated Malawi 2-1.

The Elephants had Nicolas Pepe’s second minute goal and Frank Kessie’s penalty in the second half to secure the three points.

It’s a second win over Malawi after weekend’s 3-0 victory in Johannesburg. The Ivorians will face Mozambique in their next game but the decider will be the final game against Cameroon away from home.

In other games Gabon beat Angola 2-0 via goals from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and an own goal but Egypt’s win over Libya later in the evening ensured their inability to qualify for the World Cup.

Despite not having Mohammed Salah, Egypt had Ahmed El Fotouh, Mostafa Mohammed and Ramadan Sobhi get the goals in their 3-0 victory against Libya.

The result means that Egypt have conceded once in their last four games with six goals scored.

Libya’s World Cup chances hang by a thread as they need to win their last matches hoping that Egypt slips.

Burkina Faso got their second win over Djibouti with a 2-0 win. The Burkinabe had a more emphatic 4-0 win three days earlier.

On Tuesday, Niger will host Algeria after losing 6-1 threw days earlier. South Africa will play Ethiopia at the FNB Stadium.

Guinea will welcome Morocco, Congo and Togo will play while Zimbabwe will face Ghana and Namibia will face Senegal.
