Tyrell Malacia becomes Manchester United’s first signing

    July 6, 2022

Tyrell Malacia has joined Manchester United from Dutch side Feyenoord on a four-year deal. The defender cost the Red Devils 15m (£13m) euros with a further 2m (£1.7m) euros in add-ons.

The 22-year-old’s contract has a possibility of a year extension at the end of the four-year deal in 2026. Malacia becomes Erik Ten Hag’s first signing in this summer transfer window despite being in discussion with French club Olympique Lyon.

The 22-year-old, who had 136 appearances for Feyenoord, said he has an incredible feeling to have joined United and is ready for the new chapter in his career.

“This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new teammates and a tremendous manager leading us. I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players. While I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt.” Malacia said.

The deal would have been announced on Monday had work permit papers not been delayed. He is now expected to travel with the Manchester United squad for the preseason tour of Australia and Thailand on Friday.

Erik Ten Hag, who replaced Ralf Rangnick after the end of last season, will have the chance to take a look at the team, which will now be missing Paul Pogba, who left the club in the summer alongside Jesse Lingard.

The two players ran out of contract at the club last season. The former Ajax manager is also expected to try and manage the situation involving Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has demanded an exit from the club in search of UEFA Champions League football next season.

Manchester United finished outside the top four places in the Premier League last season due to an inconsistent season in the Premier League.
