Glen Johnson, the former Liverpool defender, has cast doubts on Thiago Alcantara’s future with the club, citing the influx of new midfielders as a potential threat to the Spaniard’s career at Anfield.
Thiago has encountered a series of injury setbacks, most recently suffering from a hip problem that has kept him sidelined since April. Johnson, speaking to Squawka, acknowledged Thiago’s technical prowess but raised concerns about his adaptation to the fast-paced nature of the Premier League.
“I love Thiago as a player, he’s technically world class, but he’s struggled with injuries and I think the Premier League caught him by surprise a bit,” Johnson stated, addressing the challenges faced by Thiago in adjusting to the league’s intensity.
Despite acknowledging Thiago’s talent, Johnson expressed apprehension about the Spaniard’s future at Liverpool, especially with the club bolstering its midfield options by signing Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo.
While acknowledging Thiago’s struggles, Johnson also reflected on the midfielder’s period at Liverpool, highlighting the challenges faced by the player due to the team’s injury woes during the 2020/21 season.
Thiago’s Liverpool stint, marked by flashes of brilliance amidst injury frustrations, has garnered mixed opinions about his contributions to the team. However, as doubts loom over his future, the hope remains among the club’s faithful for Thiago to make a lasting impact in the upcoming season if it indeed turns out to be his final campaign at Anfield.
