“Robert Lewandowski did Bayern a huge favour by joining Barcelona,” says former German midfielder Dietmar Hamann

Robert Lewandowski is now a FC Barcelona player and it feels weird how a few weeks ago he was still at Bayern Munich. The Polish striker thought of taking on a different challenge as he was not happy with the management looking for different players to replace him in the near future and hence he decided to call time to his wonderful stint at the Allianz Arena. While the relationship did end on a sour note, former Bayern midfielder Dietmar Hamann feels that the Polish superstar did the Bavarians a major favour.

FC Barcelona are having a superb transfer window as they have already carried out some superstar signings and have made a statement ahead of the upcoming summer. But Hamann feels that Lewandowski’s harsh words towards Bayern and Barcelona’s interest in Lewandowski made the deal very enticing. The Polish marksman will turn 34 next month and despite that Bayern got good value and were able to reinvest that money into transfers. So Hamann feels it was a favour that was done by Lewandowski.

Bayern bagged €45 million fee and €5 million potential add-ons from a player who is in his middle thirties. Although Lewandowski has struck his prime after 30 and has been a very prolific goalscorer, the value still remains sensational for the German champions. Therefore Hamann feels that the winners of the deal were Bayern Munich without a doubt.

The former Bayern midfielder thanked the Polish forward for coming out and speaking against Bayern Munich which lead to the entire fiasco as he believes that his former club handled the situation brilliantly. The German midfielder recently shared his opinion on Diario AS as he said, “I think they are happy that he has gone. This whirlwind of signings began and he made some statements. It has to be said that Bayern behaved very well and very professionally. Lewandowski did [Bayern] a huge favour with his statements.”

There were reports that Bayern Munich were keen on holding Lewandowski for atleast another year but the disrespect from the Polish striker made things more obvious. So what could have been a free transfer, ended up costing Barcelona a lot and worked in the favour of the German record champions. “Without them, [Bayern] probably never would have been able to get the price that they obtained. As distasteful as his exit was, Lewandowski did Bayern a huge favour.”

It will be interesting to see how Lewandowski performs in the La Liga as he pairs up with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang yet again since the Dortmund days. The hopes are very high as he is one of the best strikers of the modern game and Xavi and company feels that he can be the next superstar of this FC Barcelona team.
