PSG thrashes Dijon to maintain push for Ligue 1 title

    March 1, 2020

Ligue 1 leaders, Paris St-Germain, has continued its 13 points gap on the log with a 4-0 victory over Dijon on Saturday at home.

The leader had a bright start with Pablo Sarabia opening the goals account in three minutes. The Spaniard got his name on the scoring sheet when he turned home Marquinhos’ low cross.
Kylian Mbappe doubled the leaders’ lead when he rounded Dijon goalkeeper Runar Runarsson. He later set up Mauro Icardi to tap home PSG’s third.

The 21-year-old got his brace with a thumping finish in second-half stoppage time. PSG has now restored a 13-point lead over second-placed Olympique Marseille.
Marseille had played earlier on Friday evening and narrowed the gap by beating Nimes 3-2.

PSG had earlier beat the visitors 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the French Cup on 12 February. With this result, Thomas Tuchel’s men had scored ten goals against the relegation-threatened side. All in all, PSG have scored 21 goals without conceding at home against Dijon in the top division, in just five meetings.

In Marseille’s victory, huge credit has gone to Dario Benedetto for his hattrick in the highly competitive clash.

The 29-year-old Argentinian expressed his excitement over the feat after the game saying he is happy to win it for the team.

While noting that they started on the back foot by conceding a goal first, he said they managed to draw level quickly and then get in front.
Happy with the hat trick, he said scoring is good for his confidence, and he is hoping to continue the run of form.

He also noted that what is important is to work together as a team in such a game.

On his part, the coach, André Villas-Boas praised the striker, saying he was disappointed against Nantes, but took advantage of the space between the lines at Nîmes, controlled the ball well and got his goals.

While describing the third as an intuitive goal, he said the former Boca Junior striker who has notched up 11 in the current campaign which is his first season in Europe is doing well.
