Norwich City Legend Darren Huckerby Starts Work as NHS Responder

    May 15, 2020

Darren Huckerby recently shared details about his first home visit as an NHS volunteer. Huckerby tweeted:

“Did my First NHS responders job yesterday, old lady hasn’t been out the house for 7 weeks, said she’s started to feel depressed, so got her a bunch of flowers with her tablets. Still a long way to go with this virus, stay sensible, remember it’s probably worse for someone else!”

In light of his commendable effort in this new career, let’s look at back his first two years with Norwich City.

The talented winger only scored five goals in his 16 games on loan in the 2003-04 season but he impressed his teammates.

“We won the lottery when he walked through the door,” Iwan Roberts told The Athletic.

Huckerby also became a fan favorite and the team desperately wanted to keep him but Nigel Worthington, Norwich City’s manager at the time, pretty much gave up on the idea of having him back, thinking that his return to Manchester City was inevitable.

A team meeting was arranged and everyone encouraged Worthington to continue his efforts to bring Huckerby back and Norwich City eventually made a permanent offer, which he gladly accepted.

Darren Huckerby would score 14 goals to help Norwich City clinch promotion to the Premier League in the following year and he was even a runner-up to Craig Fleming in the Player of the Season awards.

“I felt straight away that I‘d found somewhere I wanted to play football, even after two or three games on loan, I’d decided that I wanted to play for Norwich,” Huckerby wrote in his autobiography, Hucks: Through Adversity To Great Heights.
