New Spanish Super Cup draws to be held on Monday

    November 10, 2019

The Spanish Football Federation will on Monday 11th of November start a new format for it’s Spanish Super Cup by conducting the draw for the new competition.

The draw will be held at the Spanish Football Federation headquarters in the Spanish Capital in Madrid by 4 pm CET (3 pm GMT).
La Liga champions, FC Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid rivals, Athletico and Real Madrid, are confirmed to partake in the competition.

The Supercopa Espana has always been played on a two-legged format between the winners of the Copa Del Rey as well as the La Liga Champions

However, the Spanish Football Federation announced a change as the competition will now have four teams.

The teams participating will include La Liga Champions, Copa Del Rey winners and the second and third-placed teams in the La Liga.

Barcelona won the La Liga 2018/2019 season while they were beaten by Valencia to the Copa Del Rey while the two Madrid clubs will join them after Athletico’s runners up finish and Real Madrid’s third-place standing at the end of the season.

Furthermore, the competition will not be played on Spanish soil for the first time in the history of the competition as, although not confirmed, reports say it will be held in Saudi Arabia.

However, there has been increasing controversies and outcry based on the rising human rights issues happening in the Middle East country as well as the economic influence of the deal after it was revealed an amount of €180 million would be given to the Spanish Football Federation for staging the competition in Saudi Arabia.

The competition used to be played before the start of each new season, but it has been moved to January with semifinals and a final within four days starting from January 8 and 12th

The new format will mean that the La Liga will go on a 2-week break aside from the winter break, which will end on the 5th of January.
