Germany Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will be absent from the upcoming friendly matches against France and the Netherlands, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Bayern Munich captain suffered a muscle tear in his left leg during a training session in Frankfurt, sidelining him for these crucial fixtures and potentially affecting his availability for Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final clash with Arsenal on April 9.
Neuer, who was set to mark his international return against France in Lyon on Saturday after a 15-month hiatus, had been eagerly anticipated by fans and teammates alike. This comeback was especially significant considering it would have been his first appearance for Germany since the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022, where shortly after he suffered a leg break that kept him out of football for nearly a year.
The injury not only disrupts Neuer’s personal comeback trail but also poses a challenge for Germany’s preparations ahead of the Euros, set to be hosted by the country in June and July. Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach, now faces a selection dilemma, particularly in choosing between Neuer and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the number one spot.
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel had previously lauded Neuer’s recall to the national team, emphasizing the goalkeeper’s exceptional talent and resilience. “He is in a league of his own,” Tuchel remarked, expressing his astonishment at the goalkeeper’s rapid recovery and return to top-level football. “What the doctors said really shocked me,” he added, describing Neuer’s comeback as “really unique… one in 20,000 — maybe one in 20 million.”
This setback for Neuer comes amid a tense period for Bayern Munich, which is also navigating contract negotiations with star player Alphonso Davies amidst speculation about interest from Real Madrid. The club, and now the national team, must adjust to the absence of one of football’s most experienced and celebrated goalkeepers as they face pivotal matches in the coming weeks.
Nagelsmann indicated that a final decision on the goalkeeper position for the Euros had yet to be made, leaving the door open for Neuer’s return, health permitting. However, with Neuer’s injury and the timing of his potential recovery, the pressure is on for both Bayern Munich and the German national team to find solutions in his absence. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining how Germany and Bayern Munich navigate this unexpected hurdle.
