Manchester United sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick to take charge of the team

Manchester United has decided to sack their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following their ignominious defeat against Watford FC by 4-1 on Saturday. The pressure was building on the Norwegian to deliver the goods and the team’s performance in the last few weeks was mundane, which led to his sacking.

In fact, Manchester United could only manage a solitary win in their last seven matches of the Premier League. United have managed only five wins in the 12 matches they have played in the ongoing season and have 17 points under their belt and are placed in seventh place in the standings.

The club also confirmed that Michael Carrick, who was part of Solskjaer’s supporting staff will take charge of the team. Ole served the club for almost three years.

Manchester United said in the club statement, Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

“Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family. Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season”.

Meanwhile, United had finished the previous season at second place under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After the club had confirmed signings like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane, there were huge expectations but the team hasn’t been at their best in the ongoing season.

Solskjaer could not lead United to any silverware during his tenure but the penalties defeat against Villareal in Europa League final was Solskjaer’s best result.
