Manchester City wins 2021/2022 Premier League

    May 23, 2022

Manchester City have emerged the champions of the 2021/2022 Premier League season on a dramatic final day when Pep Guardiola’s team came from behind to earn a hard-fought 3-2 win.

Manchester City and Liverpool went into the final day fixtures neck in neck, with Liverpool one point behind City. While Liverpool faced Wolves at Anfield with no choice but a victory to lift the title, Manchester City needed to match their result when they welcomed Aston Villa at Etihad.

However, Aston Villa shocked the home team when they went into a 2-0 lead with 21 minutes left to play. Substitute Ilkay Gundogan scored a brace, a goal on each side of Rodri’s 78th-minute strike.

The win ensured that Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Wolves came to nothing, thus effectively dashing their hopes of a quadruple.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have already won the cup double with FA Cup and the Carabao and still have a chance at one more title when they face Real Madrid in Paris for the UEFA Champions League final on the 28th of May.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s 5-0 win at relegated Norwich means Arsenal wouldn’t be playing in the UEFA Champions League next season despite a 5-1 win against Everton.

While Manchester City retains the title they won last season, Liverpool finished in second, Chelsea in third, and Tottenham in fourth.
Burnley’s 2-1 loss at home to Newcastle ensured that their six-season stay in the top flight has ended, and they are relegated alongside Norwich and Watford.

Liverpool’s Egyptian forward, Mohammed Salah, ended the season as the top assist maker with 13 assists but shared the top goalscorer award with Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min as both had 23 goals.

Liverpool goalkeeper Allison also emerged as the goalkeeper with the golden gloves for the most clean sheets for the season.
