Lukaku speaks on leaving Inter for Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku has described leaving Inter Milan for Chelsea as ‘a mistake’.

It is no longer news that the Belgian has returned to Inter on loan after an unsuccessful stint with the Blues.

Having had some misunderstanding with Thomas Tuchel, Lukaku admitted it is not ‘likely’ that he’ll ever play for Chelsea again.

After helping Inter to their first Serie A title in a decade, the striker pushed for a transfer to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth €113m but immediately regretted it.

He then apologised to the fans in a Sky Sport Italia interview in December 2021 as he was even more determined to come back and achieved it on loan at a  €10m.

Speaking at an event where he was unveiled and presented the new Inter jerseys for the 2022-23 campaign, Lukaku pointed out that the biggest challenge of his career will be this season at the club.

Admitting the mistake of leaving, he expressed his delight to be wearing the jersey.

Lulkaku, who further said the team knows what to do ahead of the new season, which will produce a great challenge, said, “we need to continue like this.”

“I realised last season when I was in England just how important Inter are in the world. The club’s profile is improving on an international scale, the social media approach is really important too, and you can see how we act in the locker room, in training, our hugs, and jokes,” he pointed.

Describing Milan as a wonderful city, the striker said it is the reason he kept the old apartment when he left to London because his mother was coming there all the time and he wanted to return too.

Also, speaking at a Press conference, Tuchel said there is a chance that Lukaku will play for Chelsea again after his loan spell ends.

There was no buyout clause in his loan deal. So, Inter are not committed to buying him permanently after the loan deal.

Speaking further, the manager said he is not the one to give a final say on that, given the fact that he is on loan at the Same Siro club.

It was Lukaku’s willingness to return that made the deal possible, as Inter did not expect it to be as easy as it was a top talent of such magnitude back on loan just a year after selling him for €113m.
