James Milner signs one-year extension at Liverpool

    June 7, 2022

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has agreed to a one-year extension at Anfield Stadium after renewing his contract on Monday.

Milner, 36, joined Liverpool in 2015 from Manchester City on a free transfer and has now spent seven seasons at the club. A further season will make it 8 for the former England star.

Since 2015 when he arrived on a free transfer, James Milner has made 268 appearances for the club side. He was also a part of the Liverpool team that won the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League.

In total, Milner has won six major trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

While Liverpool were close to a quadruple last season, the club only won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, with Jurgen Klopp leading the team to second place in the Premier League after Manchester City nicked the title on the final game of the season.

The Reds also lost the UEFA Champions League final match to Real Madrid at the Stade de France as the Los Blancos won their 14th UEFA Champions League title.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has promised that the club will make another UEFA Champions League final, and maybe that is one of the major reasons James Milner was convinced to sign a contract extension at the club despite reduced terms in the negotiations.

Milner played 24 Premier League matches for Liverpool last season, which he described as an extraordinary one.

“Last season was extraordinary, even though it didn’t have the ending we hoped it would – but I think that will only make us all even hungrier for more success,” he said.

Liverpool will potentially have a busy summer with Sadio Mane linked with an exit from the club while the future of Mohamed Salah has not been sorted out. Belgium striker Divock Origi has also left the club at the end of the season.
