The Netherlands have continued their winning run with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Gilbratar in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Monday night.
Memphis Depay scored twice as the Netherlands swept to an easy victory over Gibraltar in their World Cup qualifier in Rotterdam.
Within the first ten minutes, the hosts opened the goals account. Liverpool defender and Netherlands captain, Virgil van Dijk headed in a ninth-minute corner.
Barcelona forward, Memphis Depay, whose first of two first-half penalties were saved, scored from a tap-in from Davy Klaassen’s pass before converting a spot-kick just before the break.
Denzel Dumfries got the fourth with a header, while Villareal winger, Arnaut Danjuma slid in the fifth. PSV striker, Donyell Malen scored late on to put the icing on the cake.
In the game in which the Dutch had 31 attempts on goal, it could be said netting 6 is a realistic target. Louis Van Gaal’s men have set a new record of scoring four goals or more in three consecutive home games for the first time since October 2001.
The Netherlands currently tops Group G, while Norway are two points behind them, and Turkey is third.
They had gone into this tie after beating Latvia 1-0 away from home, in a game where they also created some chances.
After getting knocked out of the 2020 Euros by Czech Republic, Netherlands have looked like a better team under Van Gaal. The return of Van Dijk is a tremendous boost to their defence, and they will hope to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Norway in the other group game defeated Montenegro 2-0 to continue pushing Holland.
