Gavi set to sign new Barcelona contract

    July 7, 2022

Spain midfielder Gavi will sign a contract extension at Barcelona, if the statement of Barcelona director Mateu Alemany.

Gavi, 17, is contracted to Barcelona till 2023 and has attracted interest from several top club sides in Europe.

With Barcelona’s financial situation selling Gavi looked like a possibility, but the fears of the Barcelona fans have been allayed with the words of Mateu Alemany, who assured them of Gavi’s stay.

“Gavi is going to continue at Barca, 100 percent. There is a framework agreement for the renewal of Gavi with the player and with his agent. The club, the player, and the agent are committed to making this happen.” Alemany said.

However, he further explained that the player will not sign the contract until he turns 18 in August.

17-year-old Gavi is currently on a €100,000 a week salary at Barcelona, while his agents are requesting a 6 million Euros a year wage cap, although Barcelona doesn’t want to go beyond €4M a year.

Barcelona has had to find a way to balance their books and recently signed a deal to sell off 15% of their La Liga TV rights for the next 25. This is expected to make them financially strong enough to complete some of their preferred transfer targets.

One of them is that of Robert Lewandowski, who Bayern Munich rates at over 50 million euros. Similarly, the club has also signed some players as free agents, especially on Tuesday.

The club announced the signing of former AC Milan midfielder Frank Kessie and former Chelsea defender Andreas Christiansen with both players signing a six-year contract each.

Barcelona may also have to sell Frankie De Jong, who is courted by Manchester United. Despite weeks of interest, no agreement has been made between United and Barcelona for the player.

Barcelona is also letting off players, with French defender Samuel Umtiti, Riqui Puig, Oscar Mingueza, and Denmark striker Martin Braithwaite all told to leave the club this summer.

Barcelona is also looking to sell Dutch forward Memphis Depay.
