Fulham Sweep Aside Wigan Athletic With Comfortable Win

Fulham put a stop to their five-game winless run in all competitions with an impressive win over Wigan Athletic.

Joe Bryan shot into the bottom corner shortly after the interval to break the deadlock before Tom Cairney’s stunning strike from the edge of the box tucked the ball into the top corner of the home side’s goal – sealing the three points late on.

The Cottagers were the dominant side in the first forty-five minutes and were soon rewarded for their hard work in the second half of the encounter. Wigan Athletic goalkeeper David Marshall was incredible during the game shutting out the hosts on several occasions.

Wigan are now with only one win in their last 26 away league games since August 2018. Indeed, they have garnered only eight points from their last nine league games this term.

The Latics had arrived at the Craven Cottage following a recent win and two consecutive draws that put an end to their five-game losing streak.

The Cottagersm, who had drawn their last three Championship games, started on the front foot and dominated in the final minutes of the first half. The hosts came close with efforts from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Anthony Knockaert, with the latter denied by Marshall’s fine near-post save.

Left-back Bryan then took Fulham ahead with a rebound before Marshall once again parried an effort from Anthony Knockaert following a fine run by the winger.

Wigan fought so hard for a leveller but couldn’t quite hit the mark. They were instead pegged by another goal, this time from Cairney. Knockaert who had troubled the visitors all night squared the ball to Cairney before the latter curled the ball into the goal.

A fine win for the hosts it was, and Fulham boss Scott Parker could be said to be the most pleased with the result. Parker said that the result was a relief to the players and coaches alike.

He stressed that his side had put up fine performances over the past few weeks but haven’t been quite lucky with the results. He was full of praises for his players who ensured a win this time, putting smiles on the faces of their fans once again.

Fulham will face Reading FC in their next fixture; they are available at 2.10 to claim a victory.  Reading FC at backed at 3.37 to win Fulham.
