Euro 2020: A quick look at the four semi-finalists

    July 6, 2021

The Euro 2020 tournament enters the climax of its month-long extravaganza. Four of the best performing teams have booked their place in the semi-finals and will now compete against each other for the coveted trophy. Here is a brief glance at the four semi-finalists.

    1) Italy: Italy were the dark horses among the top 7 European nations to go all the way and they have lived up to the hype so far. Apart from being defensively resilient throughout the tournament, Italy have dominated most midfield battles and look a real threat to win the tournament if their attackers finish of the chances. However, their X-factor Leonardo Spinazzola’s injury may be a cause for concern.

    2) Spain: Luis Enrique’s squad selection and team selection have been a topic of debate throughout the tournament. After a subdued start to the campaign, Spain have finally found their mojo as they scored 5 goals in two different games. They found it hard to beat Switzerland, but prevailed after a penalty shootout. They are just two wins away from being the first country to win 4 Euros.

    3) England: England have been the strongest defensive unit so far with five clean sheets in as many matches. Although they scored just 2 goals in their three group games, they managed to find the back of the net 6 times in the two-knockout matches. With Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling in top-form, home advantage and a favourable semi-final tie, it could actually be coming home this time.

    4) Denmark: No one would have expected Denmark to reach the semi-finals after the horrible events during their tournament opener against Finland and their crushing defeat to versus Belgium. They have shown immense grit and self-pride to claw their way to the knockout stage and are looking to win their second Euro crown. Their semi-final opponents haven’t conceded a goal so far and will have the backing of the Wembley crowd, but if anyone can defy the odds, its Denmark.
