    Eric Cantona criticizes David Beckham

    January 18, 2023

Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup has been met with a great deal of criticism for its human rights issues, lack of freedom of expression, and allegations of corruption and bribery to ensure the hosting of the event. Although the World Cup is over, there are still many concerns about the country’s treatment of those living and working in Qatar.

Also, the allegations that Qatar had bribed FIFA officials to secure hosting rights have cast a massive shadow over the tournament, Qatar itself, and everyone involved with the event.

One of the people who is seeing his affected image is former English soccer player David Beckham who signed a million-dollar contract of 12 million dollars to be the country’s ambassador for the next ten years, starting his work at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where he was seen in the boxes of the event.

Former French footballer Eric Cantona has come out to criticize the former Manchester United star for associating with Qatar.

“If David Beckham really believes he has to do that promotion for the right reasons — I don’t know what the right reasons are — that is OK. But if it is only for money, it’s completely different.”

The criticism of Beckham is mainly because Qatar was the UK’s rival in the race to host the 2022 World Cup. In fact, Beckham himself campaigned to bring the World Cup to British soil.

However, Beckham claims his connections and business with Qatar stem from his friendship with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. This friendship began when the Englishman played for PSG in 2013

Since then, as a result of this great relationship, the former Real Madrid and United player was invited to the Middle Eastern country on multiple occasions, where over time, the idea of turning him into one of the main images of Qatar in the long term.
