Dramatic late winner sends Union Berlin back on Bundesliga summit

    October 31, 2022

Union Berlin restored their status of league leaders in the Bundesliga standings after a 97th-minute strike against Borussia M’Gladbach.

Nico Elvedi put the visitors ahead before goals from Kevin Behrens, and Danilho Doekhi claimed a vital win for the host on Sunday evening.

In the build-up to the game, Union Berlin found themselves second on the log after a 6-2 thrashing of Mainz by Bayern Munich on Saturday saw the Bavarians occupy the driving seat. All that was needed for Union to do was to get a win to reclaim the top spot.

The host started on the front foot asserting their game on Daniel Farke’s men as they looked to take the lead.

The game gradually opened up, and Union Berlin thought they’d taken the lead through Sheraldo Becker, only to be ruled out by the VAR for a foul during play.

The home side was shocked as Gladbach took the lead in the 33rd minute through a corner whipped in the 18yard area by Lars Stindl to find Nico Elvedi powering home a brilliant header to open a 1-0 lead.

Trailing by a goal, Union Berlin tried to get back into the game to pull level but had difficulties in breaking the stubborn Gladbach defense as the first half drew to a close.

The home side picked up where they left off in the second period as chances from both sides kept begging for conversions. However, the patience paid off as Union got the equalizer in the 79th minute from Kevin Behrens. The 31-year-old nodded home following a brilliant cross from Diogo Leite.

Buoyed by the equalizer, the pressure was turned on Gladbach as Urs Fischer’s side searched for the winning goal.

Then came the moment with 7 mins of added time when Danilho Doekhi rose high to head home the winner as fans erupted in the joy of sealing a vital win.
