Denmark wants to leave FIFA

FIFA has been in the eye of the hurricane for selecting Qatar to host the World Cup, and the controversy continues as the tournament progresses. There have been many allegations of corruption surrounding FIFA and its decision to allow Qatar to host the World Cup. Some believe that FIFA was influenced by Qatar’s oil and gas wealth, while others believe that FIFA was swayed by Qatar’s promise to build state-of-the-art stadiums and infrastructure.

Whatever the reason, FIFA’s decision to award Qatar the World Cup has been met with a great deal of criticism. Human rights groups have raised concerns about the working conditions of migrant workers in Qatar, who are often required to work long hours in extreme heat.

Denmark has been one of the leading critics of the World Cup in Qatar, and now that country’s federation has made an announcement that has surprised the world.

DBU CEO Jakub Jensen and Chairman Jesper Moller have announced that they are considering asking UEFA for a general withdrawal from FIFA and the other nations affected by the #OneLove armband controversy. “It is not a decision that has been made now. We have been clear for a long time. We have been discussing it in the Nordic region since August,” Möller said.

“We have rethought it now. I imagine there may be challenges if Denmark goes off on its own. We have to think about the question of how to restore confidence in FIFA. We must assess what has happened, and then we must create a strategy, also with our Nordic colleagues,” he added.

“On November 21, England requested an emergency meeting with FIFA, who came to the English hotel,” Jensen revealed. “FIFA said it would at least give a yellow card to whoever came out with the bracelet. It has been disputed whether there is a legal basis for getting a yellow card for that, and there is. The sanction could be a yellow card, that the captain had not entered the field or that they gave him another sanction.”

Seven European teams planned to wear the bracelet and had to back down after FIFA threatened them with sporting sanctions.
