Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel calls out the referee and the VAR team for not making correct calls against Tottenham

    August 15, 2022

The Premier League saw its first big clash of the new season as Chelsea took on Tottenham in a London Derby at Stamford Bridge. The match ended with a 2-2 scoreline where the Blues dominated a large part of the game but had to be satisfied with only a point. However the match is making all the headlines mainly because of the heated exchanges between the two managers, Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte. Both of them were in a tussle at the final whistle as the German tactician claims that both of Tottenham’s goals should not have been allowed.

Chelsea took the lead in the 19th minute from a corner as new signing Kalidou Koulibaly scored a volley with great technique to thump it past Hugo Lloris in goal. After that the Blues had plenty of possession and they also created a lot of chances but they were not able to increase their lead going into halftime.

It was until the 68th minute when Pierre Emile Holjberg scored a stunner from distance. But the Chelsea players kept complaining about a foul on Kai Havertz in the build up to that goal. Referee Anthony Taylor consulted VAR but the goal was allowed as Spurs pulled one back.

Then again there were a flurry of chances as Kai Havertz missed an absolute sitter from a sensational Reece James delivery from the right flank. However James handed the lead once again when he scored himself in the 77th minute. When Chelsea thought they had sealed the tie it was none other than Harry Kane who stood up from a corner and headed home the equalizer allowing Spurs to snatch home a point from a game where they were completely on the backfoot for a large chunk.

However here again there were claims of Christian Romero pulling Cucurella’s hair. The replays were pretty clear that there was some kind of infringement but once again the goal was allowed and that led to massive frustration and all hell broke loose after the final whistle between the two managers.

But after the match the German tactician criticized the people handling VAR and pointed out the Cucurella situation where his hair was pulled by Romero. He said at the post match press conference, “But honestly, we also have VAR to help make the right decisions. Since when can players be pulled at their hair? Since when is that? And if he does not see it, I don’t blame him.

“I didn’t see it, but we have people at VAR who check this and then you see it and then how can this not be a free-kick and how can it not be a red card? How? This has nothing to do with the referee in this case. If he does not see something, that’s why we have people to check if there’s a decisive error going on,” Tuchel said on the dodgy calls made by Anthony Taylor and the entire officiating team.

The Blues will be back on the road in their next Premier League fixture as they will be visiting Elland Road next Sunday and they will hopefully look beyond this disappointing result and get back on track.
