Bournemouth and Newcastle United join big names in the next round of the EFL Cup

    September 28, 2023

Bournemouth and Newcastle are two of the 10 Premier League club sides that have made it to the round of 16 of the EFL Cup after beating their respective opponents on Wednesday.

Newcastle United faced Manchester City on Wednesday after the weekend drawing of Sheffield United in the Premier League; last season’s EFL Cup losing finalists to Manchester United went ahead to shock Manchester City 1-0 as Aleksandar Isak’s 53rd-minute strike sealed the win for the hosts.

At the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth scored two quick goals in the second half of the game to seal a 2-0 victory versus Stoke City to move on to the next round. Goals in the 51st and 54th minute of the game through Dominic Solanke and Joe Rothwell sealed the victory for the Cherries.

Elsewhere, England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale started in goal ahead of David Raya as Arsenal defeated Brentford 1-0 away from home. Nicklas Jackson spared Chelsea’s blushes in a 1-0 win over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool had to come from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield stadium, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reserved the praises for Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboslai.

“It was not the best start; it was actually the opposite. We had big chances in the first half and couldn’t believe we didn’t score. Leicester are a good side and very well set up. Minute by minute, we turned it around, and it was a good performance. There were so many little stories. Dom [Szoboszlai] was a surprise with how fast he has fit in; it was pretty much from the first minute. A top-class player with a lot of quality. He never stops. He learns a lot from the game.” Klopp said.

In total, 10 Premier League sides, three from the Championship, two from League One and one from League Two, made it to the 4th round of the EFL Cup.
