Bayern Munich mark Bundesliga restart with a 2-0 win over Union Berlin

    May 18, 2020

German Champions Bayern Munich resumed footballing action on Sunday as they claimed a routine two-nil win over Union Berlin.

Since the restart of Bundesliga on Saturday, games have been played behind closed doors. The same was the situation when Bayern played away in Berlin as players’ voices echoed from the corners of the empty stadium as the Munich side resumed proceedings on a journey to the league title for the eight-time consecutively.

Players on the substitutes bench were seen putting on their face masks as they stay separately from each other in the stands.

Bayern shot-stopper Manuel Neuer said all that matters was “a question of motivational attitude” to excel in the absence of the fans, making it seem as if the game took forever to end than the usual.” Without the fans, the minutes always seem longer”.

Teenage sensation Alphonso Davies began at left-back as he made his 22nd concurrent start in all competitions for the club. The Canadian international revealed that the game was a little bit “different” as there were no fans to cheer the team on.

” It feels great being at home during the lockdown, and I must say it was very dull, but we are glad the season continues despite the pandemic.” He said.

Robert Lewandowski scored his 40th goal of the season in all competitions for the club after putting his side ahead by converting a penalty in the 30th minute following a rash challenge by Neven Subotic in the 18-yard area.

The Berlin tried to hold off Bayern during the second half but couldn’t stop the threats posed by the Bavrians as Benjamin Pavard added another goal in the 80th minute to cement a 2-0 win.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Dortmund demolished Schalke 04 by four goals as Erling Braut Haaland continued his impressive goalscoring form.

With the resumption of the Bundeliga, dates has been set for the resolution of other leagues as they aim to follow the footsteps in the Bundesliga.
