Bayern go top after draw with Leipzig at Allianz Arena

    February 9, 2020

Bayern Munich was held to a goalless draw at the Allianz Arena as they drew with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Sunday. That result implies both teams retain their respective positions on the log.

Bayern Manager Hans Flick made just one change to the team that beat Mainz last weekend as Serge Gnabry returned to the starting lineup to replace the injured Ivan Perisic, thereby making it his [Gnabry]first league start in 2020.

Julien Nagelsmann, on the other hand, also made a change to this team, which drew against Monchengladbach last week as Dani Olmo replaced Emile Forsberg in the attack.

The match kicked off with a high intensity as Bayern started their usual pressing and aggressiveness all over the pitch as they try to regain possession anytime they lose the ball. The first chance of the game came as Thiago Alcantara curled a shot from the edge of the box in the fifth minute, but Peter Gulacsi was at alert to divert the Spaniard’s effort over the bar.

Bayern full-backs Benjamin Pavard and Alphonso Davies we’re a constant threat as they were bombarding the flanks making dangerous crosses into the opposition box as the Leipzig defense stood tall to repel the whipped crosses.

Leipzig, however, took their time as they tried to hit Bayern on the counter, but the Bavarians were fully aware of such attacks to deny them any real chance to break the deadlock.

As half time was approaching, Robert Lewandowski controlled a lofted ball from Thomas Muller to shoot before Dayot Upamecano interfered with clearing the ball to safety.

The second half began as Leipzig got their momentum on track after a precious chance fell to them as Bayern Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer raced off his line to clear a ball but missed only for Timo Werner’s goal-bound shot to brilliantly made by Alaba with a sliding tackle.

Things got more interesting as it was time for VAR to do it’s checking after Upamecano fouled Lewandowski in the box only to be judged offside before the contact in the box.

Both teams remained cautious towards the end of the game as they share the spoils. Bayern, however, has to be careful as Leipzig keeps giving the Bavarians a hot pursuit on the Bundesliga
    table.
