Barcelona on the cusp of La Liga title as weekend game looms

    May 13, 2023

Cadiz travels to Mallorca in the first game of La Liga this weekend with Matchweek 34, which will leave four more rounds left before the season ends, on its completion.

However, not many will pay attention to that game except teams behind Cadiz, who, despite sitting in the fifteenth spot, are just a point away from the drop zone and still very much in the relegation battle.

Instead, the two Madrid teams, Real and Atletico Madrid, will get the attention as any slip by both teams combined will leave Barcelona just a win against Espanyol on Sunday away from being confirmed the 2022/2023 season champions.

Furthermore, a slip by any of the two teams or one will leave Barcelona needing four points from their next two games to be crowned champions. Expectations will be on Real Madrid, who face Getafe on Saturday night, to possibly drop points as they sit in third currently but still have a European tie away at Manchester City next week.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team played a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League against Manchester City, and they will be facing a stiffer text in the second leg at Etihad Stadium. The Los Blancos may be forced to rest key players, and should that happen, and they fail to beat Getafe, it will mean it will be mathematically impossible to retain their La Liga title anymore this season.

However, Atletico Madrid’s result away at Elche will delay Barcelona’s party away at Espanyol later the same Sunday, especially if Diego Simeone’s team wins.

However, if both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid lose their respective games, Barcelona can be crowned Champions on Sunday evening by beating Espanyol. Real Madrid’s home game against Getafe is on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid’s trip to Elche is on Sunday afternoon, with Barcelona set to face Espanyol on Sunday night.

Barcelona is on 82 points, while Atletico And Real Madrid are on 69 and 68 points, respectively.
