Barcelona draw with Inter Milan, close to Champions League exit

    October 13, 2022

Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League knockout stages remain slim, no thanks to a 3-3 draw against Inter Milan.

Needing a victory to keep their hopes of a UCL knockout spot alive, Barcelona started like a house on fire.

Robert Lewandowski was in the thick of the action with his header leaving André Onana stranded, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Edin Džeko’s effort moments later hit the crossbar, but it was the Catalans who led five minutes before the break. Sergi Roberto worked his way to the byline, and as he flashed a ball across the six-yard box, Ousmane Dembélé was on hand to slam home from close range.

After the break, though, a defensive blunder from Gerard Piqué allowed Nicolò Barella to equalize. Inter led when Martínez collected Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s pass and thundered home an effort that hit both posts on its way in.

Barca forward, Lewandowski rescued Barcelona with his 90th UCL goal. Quickest to react to a loose ball in the box, the Polish international slammed home an equalizer to set up a grandstand finish.

Barça pressure was incessant in the closing stages, but an apparent winner seemingly fell the way of the visitors, who struck on the break a minute from time through Robin Gosens to seal what they thought was their safe passage to the UCL knockout stages, only for Lewandowski to again pop up and level the scores in stoppage time.

Barcelona’s next UEFA Champions League matches include a game against Bayern Munich article before traveling to the Czech Republic to face Viktoria Plzen.

In the other game of the group, Viktoria Plzen played a 4-2 loss against Bayern Munich in the Czech republic.
