Alvaro Morata scores brace as Atletico Madrid starts season with a win

    August 16, 2022

Atletico Madrid continued their dominant record against Getafe on Monday evening as they defeated their host 3-0 in their opening fixture of the 2022/2023 La Liga campaign.

Atletico Madrid has not lost to Getafe since 2011, and the statistic continued on Monday at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Spain striker Alvaro Morata was the key man in the victory as he scored a goal in each half of the game, returning to the Spanish top flight with a bang after spending last season on loan at Juventus.

Second-half substitute Antoine Griezman made it 3-0 on the night as Diego Simeone’s side stated their intent of challenging for the La Liga title, which is being defended by Real Madrid, who won the title last season.

Meanwhile, according to transfer stories, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha is generating interest from Premier League strugglers Manchester United. The 23-year Old Brazilian played 29 matches for Atletico Madrid last season, scored six goals, and assisted four times.

The Brazilian is rated over 50 million Euros, but nothing has been agreed between the Spanish La Liga club side and Manchester United.

In other fixtures, Real Madrid, who are the defending champion of the La Liga and the Champions League, also won the UEFA Super Cup last week before coming from behind to beat promoted side Almeria 2-1 on Sunday evening after Almeria took the lead in the first half.

Real Madrid took control of the second half with goals from Lucas Vazquez and a stunning free-kick from substitute David Alaba.

Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao played out a 0-0 draw with Mallorca also on Monday, while Real Betis, the defending champions of the Copa Del Rey, started their season with a comfortable win over 10-man Elche.

In other opening weekend La Liga fixtures, Barcelona couldn’t get a win against Rayo Vallecano in a 0-0 draw.
