Alone, he will not be able to win the World Cup – When Diego Maradona shared his thoughts on Lionel Messi winning the FIFA World Cup with Argentina

    September 21, 2022

Lionel Messi has had a glorious career so far. The talisman had led Argentina to the final of the FIFA World Cup 2014 but they could not cross the final hurdle against Germany. However, Messi was finally able to end his International trophy drought with the national team as they won the Copa America in 2021.

Messi has won numerous trophies and titles with Barcelona in his illustrious career. The talisman has also won four UEFA Champions League titles with Blaugrana and has won a total of seven Ballon d’Or awards.

However, late Argentine great Diego Maradona had earlier stated that Messi will not be able to win the World Cup alone and La Albiceleste will need a collective effort in the FIFA World Cup if they are to go all the way.

Maradona was quoted as saying by Sport Bible: “Alone, he [Lionel Messi] will not be able to win the World Cup. You need a solid team for that. Football history will remember Messi. Football has given him a lot, as much as he has given the sport and to win a World Cup, in my opinion, wouldn’t bring himself anything else.”

Meanwhile, Messi and co. will begin their FIFA World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22. Subsequently, they will take on Mexico and Poland in Group C of the tournament. The upcoming quadrennial event is expected to be Messi’s last big event for Argentina as he recently turned 35.

On the other hand, the Argentine has been in stellar form in the ongoing season for PSG Saint-Germain. The talisman has scored six goals in 11 appearances across all competitions for the French Club.

Argentina is scheduled to face Honduras and Jamaica on September 23 and 27, respectively.
