The Charlo twins win world title showdowns, Taylor stops Khongsong in round one

    September 28, 2020

Jermall Charlo and his twin brother, Jermell Charlo have won their respective world title fights on Saturday night.

Jermall Charlo defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko by point decision while Jermell Charlo stopped Jeison Rosario as well. The twins left Connecticut with four belts after standout performances.

They had previously said their aim is securing a legacy like the Klitschkos. Jermall on his part defended his WBC middleweight championship belt against Derevyanchenko, which was his biggest test to date and he passed. The win extends his record to 31-0.

Jermall had hurt Derevyanchenko in the third round in a fight that sees his opponent finish the game with swollen eyes. Derevyanchenko had previously been defeated twice in world title challenges against Daniel Jacobs and Gennady Golovkin, and he got a lot of credit for his performance in the fights as well.

Jermall emerged winner with wide scores of 116-112, 117-111, and 118-110 from the judges. This has further enhanced his reputation.

In the other fight, WBC defending champion, Jermell collected his rival’s IBF and WBA belts after an eight-round stoppage.

The Iron Man Jermell will later knock out Rosario, with a jab to the body. Rosario had won a unification fight in his previous outing.

Jermell is now with three of the major belts at 154lbs. This makes it a 33-1 record for him after avenging his sole loss to Tony Harrison.

In another development, world WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion Josh Taylor stopped his opponent, Apinun Khongsong in the first round from defending his belts.

The 29-year-old Scot’s left-hand body shot was too much for the Thailand fighter to handle as the undefeated 24-year-old crumpled to his canvas. He was eventually stretched off the ring.

The win moves Taylor closer to a fight with WBO and WBC titleholder Jose Ramirez. Winning the fight will make him the undisputed world champion.
